Owerri Airport to Close for 25 Days as FAAN Announces Runway Repairs

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily shut down the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri for about 25 days to perform essential runway repairs and resurfacing.
In a press release dated October 8, 2026, FAAN stated that the proposed closure is scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, pending final confirmation.
According to the authority, the closure has become necessary due to the deterioration of sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracks, which have worsened from recent heavy rainfall.
The rehabilitation will involve pavement repairs, crack treatment, and resurfacing of affected areas to restore the runway to a safer operational condition.
FAAN explained that these repairs are especially important ahead of the expected increase in passenger and flight traffic during the Christmas season.
The project will also include extending the runway to allow the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft, as air traffic to the Southeast region continues to grow. The expansion aims to improve passenger comfort and provide a smoother travel experience. The authority has advised passengers planning to travel through Owerri during the closure period to contact their airlines for updates on flight schedules and alternative arrangements.
